Training is voluntary stress applied to the body. The real work starts afterwards: recovery. Sleep, nutrition, hydration, managing post-workout comfort. It is in this window that the body adapts, progresses, and rebuilds itself.

CBD has gradually found its place in the routines of many amateur and professional athletes, in France and internationally. Not as a performance-enhancing substance — it is not one, CBD was removed from the WADA prohibited list back in 2018 — but as a support for post-workout comfort.

What Happens in the Body After Intense Training

Intense physical effort creates micro-tears in the muscle fibres. This is normal, it is actually the mechanism behind progress. In response, the body triggers a natural reaction: increased blood flow, a sensation of warmth, and muscle stiffness in the 24 to 72 hours after exercise — what athletes call DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).

Comfort during this phase shapes the quality of recovery. The less an athlete is hindered in their movement, the better they sleep, the better they eat, the better they recover.

CBD: a Wellness Molecule Extracted From Hemp

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid from industrial hemp (THC under 0.3%). Its interaction with the endocannabinoid system makes it a wellness supplement studied in the context of comfort and rest.

How CBD Fits Into a Sports Routine

CBD does not replace the fundamental pillars of recovery. It supports them. Here is how to fit it in coherently.

Right After Training: the Topical Balm

Topical application (cream, balm, roll-on) targets a specific area without entering general circulation. It offers a localised sense of comfort well suited to worked muscles and stressed joints.

Applying a CBD balm to your quads after a long bike ride, your shoulders after a weights session, or your calves after an intense run: the gesture is quick, and the comfort is noticeable.

Within the Hour: Sublingual Oil

For overall comfort (not just localised), sublingual CBD oil remains the most efficient format. A few drops under the tongue, 60 seconds, and you move on to your shower or recovery meal.

Some athletes take their CBD dose alongside their post-workout protein shake. Pairing protein with overall comfort makes sense within a recovery window.

In the Evening: the Recovery Night

It is the night that does the recovering, not the day. Sleep is the athlete’s main lever. If muscular discomfort is disrupting sleep, whether that means trouble finding a comfortable position or waking up during the night, adding CBD in the evening makes a lot of sense.

Balm → Sublingual → Evening — combine all three to cover the whole recovery window

  • Topical balm — Applied directly to the worked areas. Direct comfort for stressed muscles and joints, with no systemic effect.
  • Sublingual oil — A whole-body effect. Best taken with your recovery meal or protein shake. 60 seconds under the tongue is enough.
  • Evening CBD — Support for night-time comfort. If muscular discomfort is disrupting your sleep, this is the most relevant moment of the day for it.

CBD and Competitive Sport: Where Doping Rules Stand

Since 2018, CBD has been removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) list of prohibited substances. It can therefore be used freely by athletes subject to anti-doping testing.

One caveat, though: full spectrum products contain trace amounts of THC (legally under 0.3%). THC itself remains banned in competition. In an anti-doping test, regular and heavy use of full spectrum products can, in rare cases, produce a positive THC result.

For competitors, the solution is simple: choose a CBD isolate (pure CBD, 0% THC) or a broad spectrum product with no THC, confirmed by a certificate of analysis.

Endurance Sports vs Strength Sports: Different Uses

Runners, Cyclists, Triathletes

Endurance sports place repeated strain on the joints (knees, hips, ankles) over long periods. Joint comfort after a long session is the main use reported by practitioners.

Weight Training, CrossFit, Strength Sports

Here, muscle stiffness in the 48 hours after training is the main concern. DOMS after a heavy leg or back session can limit the quality of the next one. Better comfort means training frequency is easier to maintain.

Contact Sports (Judo, Rugby, Martial Arts)

Beyond the muscles, joint areas (wrists, knees, elbows) are put under particular strain. Topical balms are very widely used in these disciplines.

What CBD Does Not Do

CBD does not enhance athletic performance. It does not speed up protein synthesis. It is not a substitute for rest. An athlete who sleeps badly, eats too little and trains too much will not recover better just by adding CBD.

It is a comfort tool, not a shortcut.

FAQ

Is CBD Banned in Competitive Sport?

No. CBD has been permitted by the World Anti-Doping Agency since 2018. That said, full spectrum products containing trace THC can be a problem for athletes subject to testing. If you compete, choose an isolate or a broad spectrum product certified THC-free.

When Should You Take CBD Relative to Training?

Most people take it after training, not before. The goal is post-workout comfort, not preparing for the effort itself. Some also take it in the evening to support the quality of their recovery sleep.

Is a CBD Balm Better Than Oil for Muscles?

The two work differently. Balm acts locally, on the area it is applied to. Oil works throughout the body. For an athlete, combining both is often the best approach: balm on targeted areas, sublingual oil for overall comfort.

Can CBD Replace Ibuprofen After Intense Exercise?

No. CBD is not a medicine and cannot be presented as a substitute for medical treatment. If you experience intense or persistent discomfort after exercise, please see a doctor.

A wellness product, not a substitute for medical advice. Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. CBD content should always comply with the regulations of your country (in the EU/UK, THC under 0.3%).
